The INVERSO Exhibition, by the artist BERLIAC (Argentina / Norway), will be opened at 6.30pm on Thursday, 6th March, at the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (LCCA) Office Gallery. The exhibition is created in collaboration with kuš! comics.
Berliac, who is an author of graphic novels and comics, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and currently lives and works in Bergen, Norway. In 2010, he founded the independent comics publishing house, Zinemateca, which specializes in the release of work by new promising artists. Berliac, himself, is also the author of a number of graphic novels, which have been released in Argentina, Brazil and Spain. James Cartwright, editor of www.itsnicethat.com, writes that "Berliac creates illustrations and comics of earthy power, rendered swiftly and with immediacy as if carved directly into metal or monoprinted straight onto the pages of his books. Though my Spanish isn’t really up to much it’s fair to say his work deals heavily with the darker aspects of the human condition – desire, despair, fear and betrayal – drawing visual parallels between the love-making of a young couple and the thrashing of crocodiles, peppering his panels with yonic imagery."
In 2013, kuš! comics released Berliac’s story, Inverso, in Latvia. The author describes the story as follows: "In the midst of a marital crisis, an unnamed zoologist is assigned to investigate the possible case of a "negative jaguar". The deeper he delves into the Amazonian jungle, the more he steps into the other side of reality. Is it too late to go back?" The original drawings for this story and a special painting which is created specifically for the exhibition at the LCCA Office Gallery, will be on view at the exhibition.
The artist has arrived in Rīga to spend a month’s residence, which is facilitated by kuš! comics in collaboration with the Noass Centre, within the framework of the CUNE programme (Comics Union of Northern Europe). Anybody who is interested in a discussion with the artist is invited to attend at 6.30pm on 13th March at the LCCA Office Gallery, while on 18th March, Berliac will be conducting an anti-narrative comics workshop at the Art Academy of Latvia. The Inverso Exhibition will be open for viewing until 20th March 2014.
The LCCA Office Gallery is open on working days from 12 midday till 6pm; entry to exhibitions is free. Address: Alberta Street 13 (7th floor), Rīga, LV-1010.
